Blake, Farina Applaud AAA Girls’ State Softball Champs: Valley View HS

HARRISBURG – June 25, 2013 – State Sen. John Blake and Rep. Frank Farina today congratulated Pennsylvania’s newly crowned AAA girls’ softball champions: the undefeated Valley View High School from Lackawanna County.

The victors, led by Head Coach E.J. Weston, returned to the state championship one year after a heartbreaking loss in the deciding game for the state title last season. This time, Valley View shut out Erie’s Fort LeBoeuf High School, 5-0, on June 14. It’s the second time in 13 years Valley View has won the state softball crown.

“As a Valley View alumnus, the girls softball team’s victory is a very proud moment for me and of course, for everyone in the Valley View community; for all current students and alumni,” Blake (D-Lackawanna/Monroe) said. “Not only did they win it all, they accomplished their goals with character, resiliency and Cougar pride.”

“It’s an honor to recognize these fine young athletes and I am so proud at the poise our Lady Cougars showed,” Farina (D-Lackawanna/Wayne) said. “After falling short last season they proved by never giving up, learning from their mistakes, and remaining focused and persistent, you can accomplish anything.

“Not only are they now state champions but they will carry an important lesson with them when they face adversity on their journey in life. Congratulations Cougars!” Farina said.

The Lady Cougars and their coaches traveled to Harrisburg today to be honored at the Capitol with citations by Blake in the Senate and Farina in the House.

The state champion Cougars included the following players: Gina Chieffallo, Anna McElroy, Lea Wojciechowski, Emma Thomson, Blayse Cholish, Casey Pearce, Brittney Mecca, Gina Coccetti, Kelly Mecca, Clare Sebastianelli, Alex Wiltz, Jordan Seprosky, Ashley Rzeszewski, Emily Duffy, Nicole Fata, Griffin Jones, Allison Staback, Paige Durkin, Krista Walter, Kelly Richter, and batboy Tommy Miraglia.

Head Coach E.J. Weston was assisted throughout the year by Joe Zabielski, Joe Miraglia, Gary Coccetti, Lori Chieffallo, and Carl Jones. A strong booster club – Valley View Booster Softball Club – made sure the girls had what they needed to make it to the pinnacle of AAA softball in Pennsylvania.
