Blake Sworn In to Third Term in State Senate

HARRISBURG, January 1, 2019 – In front of his family and friends, state Sen. John Blake today took the oath of office on the floor of the Senate to officially begin his third term in the Pennsylvania State Senate.

Blake, who serves on the Senate Democratic Caucus Leadership Team as Caucus Administrator, has represented the 22nd Senatorial District since 2011.

“It is a great honor and privilege to continue serving the people of the 22nd District in the Pennsylvania State Senate,” Blake said.  “We have accomplished much over the past eight years and our region has greatly benefitted from state investment. Since taking office in 2011, I have successfully advocated for over $200 million in state funding and that, coupled with the significant private investment leveraged by this investment, has bolstered our region’s economy, our educational systems, public safety, transportation infrastructure, recreational assets, arts and culture.”

Looking forward to the new legislative session and new term, Blake indicated that meaningful property tax reform; significant and fair redistricting reform; and enacting a reasonable Marcellus Shale severance tax remain among priorities.

“We need to focus on workforce development and economic competitiveness,” Blake added.  “We also need to continue to increase state support for public education. If the Commonwealth would be a better partner to our public schools they would not be forced to continually increase local property taxes.”

Since taking office in 2011, Senator Blake has led the Senate Democratic Caucus in a number of key policy debates on local government; community and economic development; and pension reform. In the most recent legislative session, Blake served as the Minority Chair of both the Senate Finance and Senate Local Government Committees.

Blake will serve a four-year term representing the 255,000 residents of the 22nd Senatorial District which includes all of Lackawanna County and parts of Luzerne and Monroe Counties.
